You have them and you don't even know it. You get these from using the internet in any way. If you are connected--you're at risk. Unlike viruses, you cant tell if these are on your computer and the anti-virus program, wont pick up on them.
what they are....
Trojan-Trojan Horses or also often called Backdoors opens your PC from inside for attackers. Once a trojan is installed, someone can get full control over your computer. A destructive program that masquerades as an application. One of the most insidious types of Trojan horse is a program that claims to rid your computer of viruses but instead introduces viruses onto your computer.
spyware-It gathers user information through the user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. Spyware applications are typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded from the Internet. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers. Your personal data and your habits are gold for some advertising companies. So they try to infiltrate your computer with their software which collect your information and spy your privacy. Advertising modules can also change your default home page settings in your browser.
adware-A form of spyware that collects information about the user in order to display advertisements in the Web browser based on the information it collects from the user's browsing patterns. Software that is given to the user with advertisements already embedded in the application.
Take procautions below:
-These will not harm you computer--
Ad-aware (Lavasoft)-finds and removes spyware and ads
Spybot-Search & Destroy (Spybot) -find and removes spyware
A squared-finds and removes trojans
Spyware Blaster-does NOT remove whats already there but prevents future spyware by blocking the sites
Also, the following is an at least do this" step to protect yourself:
You can batten down the hatches a bit to prevent this from happening. Go to Tools-Internet Options-Advanced...under browsing....uncheck both Enable install on demand entries. It's a more secure way to browse the web. .....unchecking them makes it not possible for web pages you browse to run or install programs on your computer without first asking your
permission via a dialog box.
You should read the contents carefully and click the "Cancel or No button unless you're sure that it's something that you have requested... make sure that you're not agreeing to the installation of spyware, advertising pop-up generators or other nuisances...or to change your startpage to beebopaloola.com or something.
Also..Click Tools and choose Internet Options
Go to the Security tab and click the Custom Level button.............. In the ActiveX section, set :
Download signed ActiveX controls: to Prompt Download unsigned ActiveX controls: to Prompt Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe: to Disable This way when a web site attempts to run an ActiveX program you will be asked for permission. Now you will be asked whether you want ActiveX objects to be executed and whether you want software to be installed.
In the Microsoft VM section, set Java Permissions: to High safety In the Miscellaneous section, set Installation of desk top items to Prompt
